Backyard burning and unauthorised incineration are prohibited in all council areas in the Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle regions, and in other NSW council areas, as listed in the Protection of the Environment Operations (Control of Burning) Regulation 2000.
During the Bushfire Danger Period, 1 October to 31 March, NSW Rural Fire Service restricts the use of fire through fire permits and total fire bans.
Outside the Bushfire Danger Period, EPA may issue NO BURN notices and Don't Light Tonight Unless Your Heaters Right alerts to help reduce air pollution. For more information see About NO BURN notices.
NSW Air Quality alerts are issued on days when pollution levels are forecast to be unhealthy or very unhealthy. For information on other related health matters please visit the NSW Health website.
